1983 Volkswagen MK1 Caddy by Thom Hendriks
Thom Hendriks' 1983 Volkswagen MK1 Caddy is a testament to his life-long passion for the VW brand and his dedication as a DIY builder. Acquired after a two-year wait from a previous owner he met at a MK1 meet, the Caddy has been transformed into a unique ute that lays frame. Thom took it upon himself to craft this build without the aid of a professional mechanic, personally constructing a four-link rear axle to replace the factory leaf springs and notching the frame for optimal low clearance. Visually, the Caddy stands out with 17-inch BBS E51 Rennsport wheels, offering a period-correct feel that complements the vehicle’s aesthetic. Despite major modifications, Thom maintained the Caddy’s original body and interior for a classic look. A bespoke rack using factory mounting points reflects Thom's creative approach, adding to the vehicle's distinctive style. The build's combination of craftsmanship and originality makes it a prime example of a dedicated, passion-driven project, following both his heritage and a commitment to continue the VW story.
